Summer of Bitcoin

Summer of Bitcoin is a global internship program focused on bringing university students into Bitcoin open-source development and design. Participants learn how real FOSS projects work, get matched with mentors, and spend the summer shipping contributions to production codebases.

The program combines structured training with real project work. Students go through an application and proposal process, join teams across the Bitcoin ecosystem, and receive hands-on guidance from active contributors. Over time, Summer of Bitcoin has grown into one of the clearest on-ramps for new technical talent entering Bitcoin.

Why fund it?

New contributors rarely appear out of nowhere. They need context, mentorship, and enough financial support to spend serious time learning difficult codebases. Programs that close that gap make the whole ecosystem stronger.

OpenSats began supporting Summer of Bitcoin through the OpenSats Education Initiative in July 2024. That support helps cover student stipends, mentor gratuities, and the coordination work needed to run a demanding, global training program.

What's next?

Summer of Bitcoin keeps expanding its alumni and mentor network. As of the latest developer training impact report, the program has trained more than 200 students, with many alumni going on to contribute to projects such as Bitcoin Core, BDK, Fedimint, Galoy, and libsecp256k1.

The next phase is deeper compounding: more returning mentors, more alumni who become maintainers, and more students who stay in Bitcoin after their first serious open-source contribution. That kind of pipeline is hard to build and worth sustaining.
